There is no reason to be afraid or worried to book a first counseling session with me.
Hundreds of people use this form of speech therapy daily. If you have a toothache – you go to the dentist, if you have a physical illness, you make an appointment with your doctor. If you have anxieties or worries, you should speak to the advisor, it’s that simple.
Here are some common concerns customers have about booking a session.
“I don’t know how to talk about my feelings”
Do not worry! It’s not a test, you don’t need to know exactly how to express yourself, it’s great if you do, but much of the role of a counselor helps you explore and express your feelings in a way that makes sense to you.
“What if the advisor thinks I’m stupid”
One of the main essential conditions for being a person-centered counselor is not being judgmental. It is really important that the client feels able to say what he or she thinks without fear of feeling stupid or somehow wrong. Everything you think and feel is valid (and certainly not stupid) and it is really important to be able to explore it in an environment without being judged.
“What if I get angry?”
This is absolutely not a problem, we have lots of tissues on hand if you need them. One of the main benefits of counseling is being able to express how you feel, in the way you want to express, in an environment that feels safe. The counselor will help you to go at a pace that suits you, you will not be pushed to express everything you do not want. The beauty of crying is that it is part of the healing process, the wound has already happened and crying is healing.
“I don’t know what’s wrong with me”
You do not need to come to a session with all the answers. We will work together to explore what you think and feel, and to make you aware of the things that are bothering you in your life. Often old patterns of thinking and behavior are really hard to identify for ourselves because these are things that we have always thought or believed, so it is only by exploring them with curiosity and lack of judgment that we can see how these patterns influence our current way of being.
“What if i’m wrong”
It’s impossible! There is no right or wrong way to have a counseling session. You may find yourself talking a lot in one session, or not much at all. Each client is different and each session is also different. What you need for one session can be very different from what you need for another session. We go at a pace that suits you so that you feel safe and not overwhelming.
If you have any other questions or concerns that I have not addressed above, please contact us. I offer a free telephone consultation for all new customers. The relationship between the client and the advisor is the most important thing to guarantee the effectiveness of the counseling sessions, so I offer free consultation, and there is no obligation to book other sessions after the first session. I always advise clients to go home and think about how the session felt for them before booking another session. Counseling works best when done weekly, so you need to make sure the counselor you choose is right for you.
