“IT’S ECONOMICAL – Seeing a physiotherapist first has resulted in lower health care costs in various studies. The most likely reason for the drop in costs is reduced imaging, drug prescriptions and the need to see a specialist.

👉 REDUCES LONG-TERM OPIOID USE – A retrospective study found that people with low back pain who visited a physiotherapist first were less likely to be associated with early and long-term opioid use.

👉 IMPROVED HEALTH OUTCOMES AND LESS DISABILITY – A better quality study analyzed health outcomes and disability between people with sciatica who were referred to physical therapy earlier than usual care (i.e. i.e. reduces the risk of disability after one year.

👉 REDUCED USE OF SPECIALTY REFERENCES, IMAGING AND PHARMACEUTICAL PRODUCTS – Similar to being more cost effective, seeing a PT first reduces the need for a variety of interventions or tests that could lead to harm increased and have deleterious effects on self-management.

SEEING SAFE TO SEE A GENERAL PRACTITIONER OR SPECIALIST FIRST – It has been proven time and time again that seeing a physiotherapist first is completely safe. Most PTs with a doctorate degree or more than 15 years of experience, data collected from the 1970s indicate that it is no more dangerous to see a PT first than your GP or specialist .

Currently all 50 states are able to have some sort of direct access, which means if you are in pain you have the ability to quickly see a PT, avoiding the need for a referral. Early management and understanding of your condition can be of great benefit to your health, as indicated by each of the reasons above.
